Holly Springs is introducing a new, convenient, and affordable way to get around Town! With the Holly Springs Hopper service starting in January, residents will be able to hail a ride from their doorstep to anywhere within Town limits and the surrounding planning area for a fare that costs less than a cup of coffee!
Launching Monday, January 5, the Hopper will operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. The service is designed to connect residents to all their favorite places—local businesses, parks, retail centers, medical offices, neighborhoods, and more. Rides can be requested with a few easy taps on an app or a phone call. Riders can travel up to seven miles per trip.
“We are incredibly excited about the launch of the Hopper,” said Chris Hills, Development Services Director. “This service will connect our community in a way that is flexible, affordable, and accessible for everyone. It’s a major step forward in our commitment to providing innovative and efficient transportation solutions for our residents.”
With a starting fare of just $2 for up to two riders and travel within Town limits, the Hopper offers a budget-friendly option for short trips. The service is completely free for seniors (62+) and disabled riders. As an added bonus, you’ll receive two free trips just for downloading the Ride Freebee app!
Implementing a microtransit service is a Town Council initiative – one of several that seek to form partnerships to promote smart regional transportation infrastructure investments. It is included in the Growth Management and Economic Vitality section of the Holly Springs Strategic Plan.
Staff noted that the Hopper microtransit service will benefit residents making local trips around Town to locations not included as stops on a scheduled, set bus route. The Hopper complements the existing GoTriangle Route 305 bus service, which provides connections to neighboring communities, such as Apex, Cary, and Raleigh. Bus ridership has seen a slight increase with new stops added near Rex Holly Springs Hospital and on Ralph Stephens Road, convenient to nearby apartments and retail. The Holly Springs Hopper follows a similar model to microtransit services successfully launched in nearby communities, including Wake Forest.
Freebee, an external vendor, will operate the Hopper microtransit service. Half of the cost of the service is funded by a grant from the NC Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.
