Road work at the intersection of N.C. 55 and Avent Ferry Road is on schedule for completion by late October.
The lane and median additions and signal light changes are meant to funnel rush hour traffic to and from Avent Ferry Road more efficiently. The town is working with the state Department of Transportation, which controls both roads and is providing most of the funding.
Recent Work: Median reshaping, grading and paving, U-turn bulb-out and turn lane paving, and storm pipe installation
Allowed Work Times: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Saturdays, 8 a.m. – 9 p.m., (No Sunday work allowed without approval)
No Lane Closures Allowed: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 9 a.m.; 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
We’ve placed the map here to help residents get an understanding about the project. The Avent Ferry Road project will work in conjunction with the Main Street extension to limit traffic on Piney Grove Wilbon from Avent Ferry Road.
Meanwhile, construction continues nearby on extending Main Street south and west across N.C. 55. That larger project is part of a multi-prong effort to alleviate congestion on Avent Ferry Road. Widening Avent Ferry to four lanes in stages is also part of the strategy.
Main Street Extension will realign and extend Ralph Stephens Road and Piney Grove Wilbon Road to form a new intersection, with part of the project on new location, to improve local connectivity (by adding a north-south connection) and increase traffic capacity. This will distribute traffic through the network, reducing the eastbound left turning traffic volumes by 25 percent through the critical intersection of N.C. 55 Bypass/Avent Ferry Road. Traffic on Avent Ferry Road between Piney Grove Wilbon Road and the Bypass will be reduced in volume, helping this critical intersection.
Lane closures are not allowed on N.C. 55 or Avent Ferry Road during morning and evening rush hours. At other times, the contractor intends to limit lane closings as much as possible. Even so, there are times when lanes may need to remain closed even though no work is occurring nearby.
The Town has secured several federal grants for this project through CAMPO/NCDOT:
Recent Work: Clearing, grading, utility relocations, storm pipe installation, earth hauling, traffic control device installation
The Main Street Extension project is on schedule for completion in September 2017. Most of the funding is federal.
