Grab your pumpkin spice latte, a warm flannel shirt and a rake, because peak leaf season is underway in Holly Springs!
November through February is the town’s busy season for leaf collection, and it takes a lot of work to pick up the sheer volume of leaves and yard waste that is generated. Make sure to mark your calendar, because yard waste is switching from weekly to every other week, and your neighborhood or street will have a specific day on the schedule for pick-up.
The town has five leaf trucks that need to service the entire community, and when one of them breaks down it puts the entire schedule in jeopardy. The most common reason for equipment failure is the mixing of leaves with other items that can’t be vacuumed, like branches and rocks. The town uses a vacuum truck for leaves and a chipper truck for branches, but if residents co-mingle these items it often leads to a vacuum truck needing repair.
“Please partner with us to make sure everyone gets their yard waste picked up on schedule,” says Charlie McDougald, Leaf Crew Supervisor. “We have found the strangest things buried under leaves, like bricks, pruning shears or even rakes. Our goal is to give you the quickest and best service possible and we need your help to make that happen.”
Some other tips to keep the leaf collection program running smoothly:
Please place leaf piles behind the curb at the edge of your yard to the extent possible to keep travel lanes clear.
Don’t park vehicles near leaf piles or have trash cans blocking the way or your leaves will not be picked up.
Keep leaf piles and other yard waste well away from storm drains to prevent them from washing into drains and clogging them.
Place leaves out for collection only on your scheduled week.
