Christian Warren Freed
On May 4, it will mark nine years since I first received an email from Christian Warren Freed. The email was simple “I’m a local author with nearly 20 titles in circulation. I’ve won a few awards and have been on numerous Amazon bestseller lists. Is there a way I could get a little feature in Suburban Living? Thank you for your time.” Little did Chris know that we would still be working together nine years later. His colorful writing style is a great complement to the magazine, which often features straightforward editorials with minimal embellishments. We are lucky and proud to have Chris on the team!
– Rob Fox, Founder and Publisher for Suburban Living
Well, like Bigfoot, not everything can stay hidden forever. For those of you who have been reading and enjoying the magazine for a few years, I am one of those responsible. I started on a whim, just looking for a little extra revenue on the side and to keep me out of trouble around the house. Years later, I truly enjoy what I do and the stories I get to bring to you, thanks to Fox Publishing.
I’ve been a resident of the town for twelve years now and remember a time when there really wasn’t a Holly Springs. Certainly nothing like we know now. While North Carolina wasn’t always my first choice for settling down after I retired from the Army, I can think of no other place I’d rather be.
With all that being said, who am I? First, I despise talking about myself. It’s too self-serving and I feel like a fool doing so. Second, I was born on a cold winter night in Buffalo, New York, more years ago than I would like to remember. Deciding I didn’t leave anything in Western New York, I joined the Army and went on to serve for over twenty years.
Most of my time was spent at Fort Bragg, with a few memorable tours on the Korean DMZ, before the war started. I deployed to Afghanistan in 2002, then Iraq in 2003, and Iraq again in 2005. The Army then made me a babysitter at West Point for my final tour before I hung up my boots and decided to see what this civilian life was all about.
In the decade or so since retiring, I have written over 30 military fantasy and science fiction novels, as well as my combat memoirs, a children’s book, and a pair of how-to books focused on indie authors and the decision-making processes for writing a book and what happens after.
My first book, Hammers in the Wind, has been the #1 free book on Amazon several times and I have won multiple literary awards, perhaps the most prominent being from the L Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest.
I have always been passionate about history and combine my knowledge of the past with modern military tactics to create engaging, quasi-realistic worlds for my readers to lose themselves in. I earned my BS from Campbell University and, thanks to the VA for sending me back to school, an MA in digital communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
As many of you might recall, I spend my days with my Bernese Mountain Dogs, helping my wife with her real estate business, and I am an active member of the local American Legion post. If you happen to drive by my neighborhood, there’s a good chance you’ll find me with a cigar in one hand and a pen in the other.
Thanks to the Mrs., I now have a Traeger smoker I like to experiment with. Bourbon and cigars are my thing. I think at last count I had over 40 different bottles of bourbon, most of them unopened, and I enjoy a few fingers on the rocks with a good hand-rolled cigar.
