UNC REX Healthcare has begun work on the next phase of expansion at its Holly Springs campus, with planning underway for a second medical office building.
The three-story, 45,000-square-foot facility will attach to the existing atrium and 30,000-square-foot medical office building, which opened in 2011. UNC REX officials are now working with developer Duke Realty, the Department of Transportation, the town of Holly Springs and others for permits and other approvals. UNC REX expects to begin construction later this year and open the new facility in 2017.
That project is under way as planning continues for a 50-bed community hospital that will be built at the Holly Springs campus. Work on that hospital is expected to begin next year. There are discussions with DOT and the town of Holly Springs about how to address traffic patterns at the site. There has recently been a lot of concern about traffic at this intersection, and the Town is taking the patterns at this intersection seriously. It’s not just a concern for daily traffic for the residents, but also for emergency vehicles that are going to need to access the hospital. There are some residents that are worried about the traffic that the hospital could add, but I’m quite certain that those same residents will count their blessings if they are ever in need of a close E.R.
“We are expanding to meet the increasing demand for medical care and services among patients in Southeast Wake County, one of the state’s fastest-growing regions,” said Tom Williams, vice president of Ambulatory Services and responsible for the strategic planning, development and operations of UNC REX’s suburban facilities. “Patients and their families tell us that they want more services closer to home.”
UNC REX’s Holly Springs campus opened in 2011- and was immediately popular with patients. The campus is home to REX Express Care of Holly Springs, REX Surgical Specialists, REX Vascular Specialists, REX Primary Care, REX Pediatrics, laboratory and radiology, UNC Ophthalmology, N.C. Heart & Vascular and more.
“Some of our existing providers want to expand in Holly Springs and we expect others will join them when the new medical office building is ready,” Williams said. “They are eager to see patients from not just Holly Springs, but Fuquay-Varina, Coats, Lillington and other parts of Wake and Harnett counties. Our campus is quickly becoming a medical destination for the region.”
