In 1999, three business colleagues decided to give back to the community. They challenged each other to shave their heads for donations to raise funds for kids with cancer. The first event took place at Jim Brady’s pub in Manhattan. The goal was to shave 17 heads to raise $17,000. The ended up shaving 19 heads and raised $104,000 to fund the research of the Children’s Oncology Group.
By spring of 2002, with 37 head–shaving events, shaving heads had now raised more than $1 million!
Fast forward to 2012. The event has gained so much momentum, that they reached the $100 million mark in research grant funding since 2005.
On March 6th, there will be another head-shaving event at Holly Grove Middle School. Unfortunately, the timing of the event doesn’t coincide with press time for the magazine. The magazine will go to the printer before the event, and will be distributed after the event has taken place.
At press time, the school has raised $12,459 toward their goal of $25,000. The top 5 participants are:
Jason Blochalk (teacher)
Max Fox (student)
Caroline E. (student)
Grace O. (student)
Sonya Reynolds (teacher)
The school currently has an amazing 59 teachers and students that are volunteering to have their heads shaved to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This is the first year that the school is allowing students to participate in the event. Donations can be made up to, and after the event. Follow the link from the Holly Grove Middle School website.
