There has been a seismic shift in how people think about their careers. Some people want more than a paycheck, and now are looking for meaningful work that makes a difference. For those who crave a fulfilling career, local government may be the perfect fit because you can see the fruits of your labor as the community thrives and grows.
“Local government is a great place to work because you can really see the impact you are making,” said Jaime Joyner, Town of Holly Springs Human Resources Director. “Whether you are working in the Police Department, Fire Department, Parks and Recreation, Development Services, Public Works, or Utilities and Infrastructure, your actions are impacting our residents on a daily basis. Also, people don’t realize that there are great jobs in support departments like Finance, IT, HR and Communications that offer a way to use your specific skills to give back to your community.”
Local government is a very dynamic environment, and municipalities need agile learners who are eager to pick up new ways of doing business or delivering services. The Town is always looking for talented people who provide “learn-how” as well as “know-how” to meet an ever-changing landscape of technological advances, demographic changes, and new regulations. Benefits the Town offers include health, dental, vision, life, and supplemental insurance; paid parental and eldercare leave; tuition reimbursement; and a free membership to the Hunt Fitness Center.
“Financially, we offer competitive pay and a 401k, plus full-time employees are a part of the local government employee retirement system (LGERS),” said Joyner. “This allows you to make contributions to your retirement, and the Town of Holly Springs makes contributions on your behalf as well. This means, if you retire from LGERS, you will receive a monthly benefit for the rest of your life. And, depending on which option you choose, your beneficiary may receive the benefit for the rest of their life as well.”
The Town has more than 370 full-time employees and 130 part-time workers but is not immune to the hiring difficulties the rest of the country is facing right now. According to Joyner, recruiting for part-time positions within Parks and Recreation has been slow, and there is also a lack of applicants for more skilled technical jobs. However, the Town is fortunate that it is not experiencing the turnover in public safety positions that other municipalities are experiencing.
