Town Opening Yard Waste Convenience Center for Residents, New Carts to Collect Yard Waste Next Year
Big changes are coming to yard waste collection in Holly Springs! It’s all starting this fall with the opening of the Town’s first-ever yard waste convenience center that residents can use at no additional cost.
Residents soon will be able to drop off any amount of yard waste at the convenience center, located at 6412 Rex Road in southwest Holly Springs. Tree limbs, shrubbery, lawn clippings, leaves, pine needles – all types of yard waste that can be left at the curb for collection by the Town – also will be accepted at the convenience center.
“We love giving residents another option,” said Paige Scott, director of Holly Springs Public Works. “Curbside collection of yard waste is continuing, but if a resident wants to dispose of it before their collection date, the convenience center will be a fantastic choice. The center also could come in handy if a resident has a large quantity of yard waste and wants to avoid paying the Town for curbside collection of the excess amount.”
The yard waste convenience center will be open Wednesday through Sunday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. beginning later this fall. Visit www.hollyspringsnc.gov/yardwaste for updates on the date of the convenience center opening.
As visitors drive in, Town staff will ask to view proof of Holly Springs residence, such as a driver’s license or utility bill. The center is for residential customers only. Landscaping companies must dispose of waste at another location.
Loose yard waste must be deposited at the convenience center as it would be at the curb – without bags or containers. If residents bring yard waste to the site in a bag or bin, they can empty the container at the center. Items that cannot be left at the curb, such as dirt, root balls, mulch, rocks, concrete, and construction debris, also cannot be left at the convenience center.
As in previous years, during November through February when large quantities of leaves are placed curbside for collection, the Town moves to a zone yard waste schedule. Details about collection will be mailed to residents in October and posted online at www.hollyspringsnc.gov/yardwaste. The opening of the convenience center comes in advance of rolling out a new way of collecting yard waste next spring.
Yard Waste Cart Collection Begins Next Year
We’re Keeping it Green in Holly Springs with a new way of collecting yard waste beginning in March: New carts will be delivered to residents for yard waste. Fill the cart with lawn clippings, leaves, and other types of yard waste, and place the cart at the curb on the same day as recycling collection.
In addition to the benefits of more efficient collection, placing yard waste in carts will keep debris out of storm drains that empty into local creeks, streams, and waterways. Using carts helps prevent flooding that can occur when yard waste clogs drains. Cart collection also reduces the pollen and dust in the spring as the fine particles can’t be contained in vacuum trucks.
The biweekly collection will continue to run throughout the year – even next fall when Town vacuum trucks are out in full force collecting leaves from curbsides.
“Next year, residents can fill their yard waste carts with leaves and rake leaves to the curb – we will collect both,” Scott said. “The guaranteed biweekly collection from yard waste carts will be in addition to the zone leaf collection with the vacuum trucks.”
All residential yard waste customers will receive new carts in January and February. The brown carts will be branded with the Holly Springs logo, and the lids will be labeled for yard waste collection. Every residential yard waste customer is already automatically signed up to receive a cart, required for most types of yard waste collection beginning March 2024.
Residents who want to order additional yard waste carts, or decline a cart, can complete an online form. Yard waste is part of the monthly Town utility bill. The charge will not be waived, even if a cart is declined. Additional fees will be incurred for each additional cart as requested by the resident and added to their monthly utility bill. For more information and a link to the form, visit hollyspringsnc.gov/yardwaste. Or, call 311 or (919) 577-3111 if outside Town limits.
