Finding the ideal gift comes easily to some people. They seem to have a natural talent for choosing presents that spark happiness and make a lasting impression. Meanwhile, others view gift-giving as a stressful chore, worried that their choice may end up in the back of a closet, forgotten about and collecting dust. So, what traits do exceptional gift-givers have in common?
Their secret isn’t spending a fortune or following short-lived trends. Instead, they notice little details, think creatively, and choose with intentionality and genuine thoughtfulness. Keeping that in mind, anyone can find gifts that hold special meaning and create lasting, unforgettable memories this holiday season.
In recent years, the “seven gift rule” has gained significant popularity across social media platforms and on parenting blogs.
Something they want
Something they need
Something to wear
Something to read
Something to do
Something for “me”
Something to share
Although its exact origin remains unknown, the concept has been widely embraced as a guideline for giving with intention by parents, as well as advocates of minimalism and sustainable living. Beyond curbing excess and clutter, following this guideline provides an excellent framework for generating ideas and can make shopping a little less overwhelming.
The categories are straightforward, and simple to keep in mind when choosing gifts for everyone on your list; but navigating the range of options within each one can still feel daunting, especially when striving to select something truly memorable and appreciated. This is where the real secret to giving a great gift comes into play — knowing your recipient and choosing with purpose. Here are some suggestions to help you get started.
Start shopping as early as possible. Rushing around at the last minute increases unnecessary stress and often leads to impulse buying just for the sake of having something to give.
Pay attention in casual conversation. Take note of ideas mentioned in passing; the hobby a friend said they’d like to take up, the name of a child’s favorite author, a fragrance or scent your spouse admired while shopping.
Several years ago, I was walking past a yarn store with a good friend, and she mentioned always wishing she knew how to knit. I kept it in mind, and for Christmas that year I gifted her a set of beginner knitting lessons. She was truly thrilled and surprised and has been knitting with a passion ever since.
On another occasion I gifted a copy of a family member’s favorite childhood book that I was able to find on an online book re-sale site. She was shocked that I remembered the title, and it was a huge hit!
Keep a little note pad handy or use your phone’s notes app to jot down the little things your friends and family mention in passing throughout the year. You may end up with some great ideas, and they’ll be impressed that you paid attention.
Go for experiences instead of things. Concert tickets, cooking classes, sporting events, a wine tasting, or a weekend getaway are all great ways to create lasting memories and avoid adding clutter to someone’s home. Fortunately, the Triangle area offers some really unique attractions close to home. Gift a sunset boat cruise on Jordan Lake, a visit to the Duke Lemur Center, or a family membership to the Marbles Kid’s Museum.
Solve a problem. Keep an eye out for solutions that make everyday life a little bit easier. An “air tag” or “tile” type tracking device is a great idea for a co-worker, or anyone in your life who always seems to misplace their keys. A multi-pack of USB chargers is perfect for the parent whose charger always disappears and somehow miraculously ends up in their kid’s room. Or get a wireless meat thermometer for your favorite chef (trust me, it’s a game-changer). And if you’re looking for a for a great gift for a young child, a fun, kid-friendly toy chest helps keep play areas organized while teaching good cleanup habits.
Elevate their daily life. Consider high thread count bed linens or plush towels for someone who deserves a bit of pampering but rarely treats themselves. Upgrade the bakeware for a grandmother who lovingly spends her time in the kitchen. Or gift a cookbook to a young adult venturing out on their own for the first time. Indulgent bath and beauty items make thoughtful gifts for moms, while tokens for the local driving range are ideal for a dad who enjoys golf.
Food-focused gifts are a win. You really can’t go wrong with food! Consider putting together a snack box for your teenager or college student. Bake a fresh batch of cookies for the neighbors, grab a favorite bottle of wine for a family member, or pick up some specialty roasted coffee beans or fancy chocolates — the possibilities are endless. Paying attention to what people like to eat and drink always goes a long way.
Certain tried-and-true items are always appreciated. Games the whole family can play, monogrammed items, framed children’s artwork (grandparents especially love this!), or a photobook. Digital photo sites like Shutterfly and Mpix create great albums in addition to a variety of other personalized gifts originating from your photos. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that have the greatest impact.
It’s also important to try to avoid gift-giving mistakes, the most common of which is giving an item you would like, without taking the recipient’s own preferences or interests into consideration. Also, steer clear of anything with hidden costs, or something that will incur an expense on their part. For instance, tech gadgets or devices requiring a paid subscription, or gym/club memberships with additional costs necessary in order for them to participate.
Shopping for gifts is easier than ever. If you’re not interested in a trip to the local mall, take advantage of online marketplaces, like Etsy, for unique, original goods such as art prints, jewelry, home decor, and crafts, or eBay for vintage items and collectibles.
Better yet, grab your list, power off your device, and head downtown to shop local! There are some lovely boutiques and small businesses in Holly Springs with distinctive offerings that you’re not likely to find anywhere else.
Finally, get creative by upping your gift-wrapping skills. A beautifully wrapped package elevates the presentation and adds a thoughtful, personal touch.
