Do you ever find yourself thinking, “Wow, I’d really like to go dancing, but have no one to go with?” If you are a fan of fun, sun and beach music, then you have to check out the BassLake Area Shag Society.
If
you are from a place where “shag” is a type of carpet and has nothing to do with dance, then this might sound like an odd name for a social club. But, if you are from North or South Carolina, or have been living here long enough, you know that Shag is the iconic dance done to Carolina Beach Music and was born on the Grand Strand in Myrtle Beach.
The BassLake Area Shag Society (BASS) was started ten years ago by a small group of Holly Springs residents and was originally named the Southwest Wake County Social Club. What started out with 20 members, has now grown to over 100. The founders of the club began with the purpose of promoting the state dance as well as forming fellowships with other Shag enthusiasts in Wake County and across the state. Over the last ten years, BASS has become a member of several regional and national organizations, including, ACSC (Association of Carolina Shag Clubs) and the National Fast Dance Association. In addition to its core members, BASS also has a dance team known as the Bass Lake Babes.
These amazing dancers are not only stars on the dance floor, they are stars in their communities as well. BASS is involved in supporting a number of local groups and charities, including:
- Baptist Missions
- Western Wake Ministries
- Ellen Taylor Junior Shag Association
- Support of members in need
- Fundraising events such as a Bar-be-que to benefit the community
BASS welcomes anyone who enjoys Shag or would like to learn more about Shag Dancing. In addition to offering free dance lessons before each social, members enjoy several events throughout the year. Each year the group participates in the Society of Stranders, or SOS, held in N. Myrtle Beach and includes meetings and parades as well as holding demonstrations and shows for local nursing homes and various events.
BASS meets once a month at the Upper Deck Sports Bar in Cary.
The cost for a single membership is $20 and $40 for couples.
